Freedom Caucus risks government shutdown Passed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office is reportedly opposed to the Voter Integrity Act.
To avoid a government shutdown, Republicans and Democrats need to agree on a continuing resolution by Sept. 30, but some Republicans want to tie the motion to a bill that would require proof of citizenship to vote.
“The most immediate threat facing the country is the integrity of this election cycle.”
The bill is called the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE for short.
The Hill reported that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana is considering including the bill in a budget resolution.
“The SAVE Act is certainly a big part of this discussion,” Johnson said.
“And this isn't just the Freedom Caucus, members across the conference have the same concerns as us,” he added. “And we believe that perhaps the most pressing issue, one of the most immediate threats facing the country, is the integrity of this election cycle.”
But Axios Reported McConnell's office warned Johnson not to include the motion because Democrats might respond by adding their own motions to the resolution, which could include the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a Democratic priority.
President Joe Biden has said he strongly opposes the bill to protect voter integrity, and the Democratic-controlled Senate would make it difficult for it to pass. The bill was approved in July by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives with the support of five Democrats and all current Republicans.
The Biden administration has previously said it opposes the bill, saying it would make it harder for some Americans to vote.
“This bill would do nothing to secure our elections, while making it much harder for all Americans to register to vote and increasing the risk that voters will be removed from the voter rolls,” the White House said in a statement. “It's clear that existing laws preventing foreign nationals from voting work as intended. It is extremely rare for foreign nationals to break the law by voting in a federal election.”
