Oregon state Rep. Janelle Bynum won the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, setting her up to face off against Republican incumbent Lori Chavez DeRemer this fall.
Bynum defeated Jamie McLeod-Skinner to advance to a showdown with Chavez-Dellemer in a race widely expected to play a key role in determining which party controls the House of Representatives. .
McLeod-Skinner ran as a left-leaning progressive and defeated longtime Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader in the 2022 primary two years ago, before narrowly losing to Chavez-DeRemer.
Some Democratic leaders believe Bynum, a state representative from a southeast Portland suburb, has a good chance of winning the general election. Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek and three Democrats from Oregon’s U.S. House delegation have endorsed him.

Ben Gaskins, an associate professor of political science at Lewis & Clark College, said of Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, “This is one of the biggest battleground districts nationally, with both parties trying to maintain control of the House of Representatives.
