Ads Coming to McDonald’s Drive-Thru Menus
Starting next month, McDonald’s might start showing commercials on its drive-thru menu boards as part of a new digital advertising program. This initiative will feature promotional spots from other brands alongside McDonald’s offers, like their famous McFlurries.
The company plans to run these advertisements in 450 of its own locations, displaying content from various businesses, including Geico, on its large outdoor screens.
During their recent Investor Day, Morgan Flatley, who is the global chief marketing officer and executive vice president for new business ventures at McDonald’s, shared details about this new strategy. Investor Day is a time when McDonald’s discusses its long-term plans with board members and fans alike.
This announcement follows the earlier introduction of the McDonald’s Media Network, a marketing effort that was initially hinted at in 2023. The chain hopes to transform this venture into a substantial business, aiming to generate $1 million through paid promotions and in-store ads aimed at capturing customer attention.
Flatley mentioned that “commerce media” is rapidly growing, expected to surpass $100 billion in the US by 2028. He sees it as a chance to create revenue with minimal extra costs, operational demands, and no hassle for customers. However, it’s worth noting that many customers already feel their experience is being compromised by the thought of watching ads while ordering their favorite meals.
Some diners are quite vocal about their displeasure. One Facebook user commented that nobody wants to watch ads while in the drive-thru, suggesting it was a ridiculous idea. Another frustrated individual expressed through social media that it seems absurd to pay for food only to be forced to watch an unskippable advertisement, comparing it to a YouTube experience. There was also a sentiment that fast food is increasingly sidelining the food itself, with one user stating it’s tough to enjoy a burger when distracted by promotions for unrelated products.
In light of this announcement, McDonald’s stock dropped by about 1.38%. The Investor Day event also presented plans for McDonald’s to innovate by introducing new protein-rich menu items. Skye Anderson, the president of McDonald’s USA, mentioned that due to medications like Ozempic, which manage blood sugar and appetite, many customers are leaning towards smaller, nutrient-dense meals.
Anderson remarked, “This is an opportunity. We need to keep giving them more reasons to make McDonald’s their first choice.” The fast-food giant is looking to test various new items, such as egg bites, bowls, grilled chicken sandwiches, and wraps, targeting fitness-conscious customers.
The response to a protein-enriched Filet-O-Fish appears to be mixed, leaving some questions about its future appeal.
