McDonald’s to Reintroduce Fried Apple Pie for America’s 250th Anniversary
On Tuesday, McDonald’s announced the return of its fried apple pie in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. This treat will be available for a short time at select U.S. locations starting June 23, marking the first significant national offering in over 30 years.
“Summer can fly by, but special moments linger. With America’s milestone approaching, we’re bringing back Fried Apple Pie—a cherished favorite and a true national gem meant for savoring the season,” the company stated in a press release.
Fried Apple Pie Making a Comeback
McDonald’s shared that the beloved dessert features a filling made with 100% American apples, all wrapped in that same golden, crispy crust fans remember fondly.
The history of the fried apple pie dates back to the 1960s, when it originated from a family recipe by East Tennessee owner Lytton Cochran. What began as a hit among locals eventually became a McDonald’s staple.
“Certain foods remind us of people, and fried apple pie is definitely one of those. It evokes nostalgia and connection,” said Eric Cochran, a McDonald’s owner and operator.
He recalled how, when Ray Kroc was developing McDonald’s dessert menu, his grandfather suggested the fried apple pie as it was already a favorite. Lytton Cochran’s wife took months to refine the recipe, so it feels just right to bring it back for this special summer occasion.
In 1992, McDonald’s phased out the fried version across most of the U.S., transitioning to baked pies in response to health trends regarding fat and cholesterol.
Global Availability and Special Events
Interestingly, the fried apple pie is still on the menu in Hawaii and other markets such as the United Kingdom, Mexico, Greece, Australia, and China.
To further celebrate this occasion, McDonald’s plans to erect a huge 35-foot fried apple pie along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, near their Chicago headquarters, which will be on display until July 4th. There will also be a kickoff event to unveil the largest fried apple pie in the Chicagoland area, featuring live music, refreshing Coca-Cola, and complimentary arch cards.
