McDonald's US sales fall short of analyst expectations as CEO points to execution issues

McDonald’s Faces Challenges Amid Slower Sales Growth

On a recent episode of “Morning with Maria,” Mitch Rochelle explored McDonald’s latest profit figures, expressing concern over how inflation is impacting low-income consumers. This, he pointed out, might be leading them to cut back on fast food purchases.

In its recent second-quarter report, McDonald’s sales growth fell short of expectations. The company attributed this, in part, to compliance issues that have limited their ability to promote budget-friendly deals targeting low-income customers.

CEO Chris Kempczinski highlighted a drop in repeat visits from loyal customers, which he connected to weak promotional efforts and a decline in the use of digital promotions, like “buy one, get one” offers. These digital deals used to drive about two-thirds of the traffic loss this quarter.

Information from LSEG revealed that comparable sales in McDonald’s primary market increased by just 0.8%, a downturn compared to the anticipated 1.06% rise. For context, last year saw a 2.5% growth in the U.S.

“Our strategy isn’t flawed; we simply failed to execute effectively in the second quarter,” Kempczinski acknowledged.

Fried Apple Pies Return for Celebration

Interestingly, McDonald’s has decided to bring back its fried apple pie in conjunction with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Yet, sales figures indicate that performance has lagged behind expectations. Executives also mentioned that various franchisees are having trouble properly implementing lower-cost menu items.

Kempczinski noted that while McDonald’s has reclaimed its leadership in value and affordability, execution has been inconsistent across its restaurants. He pointed out that the most successful locations have managed to adopt affordable menu strategies, which must be uniformly executed throughout all establishments.

Moreover, it was indicated that nearly one-third of restaurants don’t comply with the Everyday Affordable Menu guidelines. There are plans to educate franchisees on the importance of following these pricing strategies, which will influence the overall business assessment.

McDonald’s Trials AI Ordering System

The company is also experimenting with an AI-driven drive-thru ordering system named ARCHIQ in five locations across the country. Although there have been moves to improve operations, they haven’t come without challenges. Kempczinski remarked that teams at restaurants felt overwhelmed by new initiatives, affecting efficiency and leading to slower customer service.

McDonald’s Chief Financial Officer Ian Bowden announced plans to roll out additional national digital flash offers starting next week, aiming to re-engage frequent customers while also focusing on personalized products for the brand’s most dedicated patrons.

New Growth Strategy in Place

Borden mentioned that efforts to streamline operations will include the removal of some non-customer-facing activities for the remainder of the year. In a pivotal move to enhance growth, McDonald’s has appointed Skye Anderson to lead U.S. operations. With a long tenure of 26 years, including a stint as the U.S. Chief Operating Officer, he will oversee approximately 14,000 restaurants while guiding the new turnaround strategy.
