Rep. Raymonica McQuiver Addresses Federal Complaint
Rep. Raymonica McQuiver from New Jersey recently spoke about the unsettling federal complaint linked to her visit to a detention facility operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Following her visit, lawmakers faced serious charges, amounting to 17 years, after an altercation with law enforcement while departing the facility.
“As a current lawmaker, facing accusations like this is shocking and quite scary,” she shared in a Wednesday interview on MSNBC.
McQuiver stated that her family weighs heavily on her mind regarding these allegations.
“When they talk about a potential 17-year prison sentence, I can’t help but think about my nine-year-old daughter and my husband,” she reflected.
This first-term congresswoman emphasized that her purpose for being there is clear, which, she believes, is why she’s being targeted.
She maintains a not guilty plea to the accusations and is confident she’ll demonstrate her innocence in court.
“I’m obviously innocent, and I’m looking ahead to the facts being revealed in this process,” McIver explained, adding, “However, it’s incredibly stressful. The cost of fighting this case, needing a full legal team, adds to the burden. It’s just a lot to deal with, and frankly, it feels unnecessary.”
Officials from the Trump administration have alleged inappropriate behavior on McQuiver’s part, claiming to have video evidence.
“We will not accept assaults on ICE by anyone, including members of Congress,” a statement on social media noted after the event.
In a video clip shared online, McQuiver is seen surrounded by a crowd outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, with law enforcement nearby.
McQuiver asserted that the charges filed by Alina Haba, acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey and former lawyer for Trump, are driven by political motivations aimed at silencing Democrats.
“We cannot let this administration hinder us as elected officials, especially as Democrats trying to fulfill our responsibilities,” she remarked during her conversation with Psaki.
The indictment claims she “slammed” her forearm against an agent and attempted to restrain them, as reported.
According to the same outlet, she also mentioned that she placed her arm around Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to avoid being arrested while also making contact with an agent.
McQuiver finds herself among five Democrats who have been arrested or charged by the Trump administration.
