‘Mean Girls,’ ‘Ghostbusters’ and more movies where the original film has beaten new versions at the box office

Movie fans and critics have strong opinions about film remakes.

Remakes can be huge successes or huge flops. Filmmakers are taking a risk when they try to recreate stories that fans have loved for years. Some people want to see new interpretations of their favorite movies, while others don’t care if they don’t.

Opinions are swirling in favor of both versions, so it’s hard to say which is “better.”

When it comes to box office takings, some remakes have outdone the originals on sheer numbers, but some originals have been the most financially successful. The originals below have grossed more than their remakes (even when accounting for inflation), but which film is “better” is always up for debate.

So let’s take a look at eight original films that performed better than their remakes at the domestic box office.

  1. “Mean Girls”
  2. “West Side Story”
  3. “The Jungle Book”
  4. “Pete and the Dragon”
  5. “Ghost Busters”
  6. “Red Dawn”
  7. “One-point breakthrough”
  8. “Conan the Barbarian”

The 2004 film has a cult following and has its own anniversary on October 3rd, marking one of the film’s most memorable scenes.

The story told in the film is based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman.

After a musical version of the story began on stage, a new film was in the works.

Twenty years after the original, a second Mean Girls movie was released, featuring songs from the hit Broadway musical.

The film, starring Angourie Rice, Rene Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Avantika Vandanapu and BeBe Wood, doesn’t live up to the original.
