Measles Outbreak Exceeds 1,000 Cases, Second Highest Year Since It Was Declared Eliminated in the US

Reports indicate that over 1,000 cases of measles have been identified across the United States. Considering that the disease was declared eliminated in 2000, these numbers suggest a potential resurgence akin to the 2019 outbreak.

This latest outbreak originated in Texas and has now spread to nearby states like Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Kansas, with confirmed cases reaching at least 1,002 as of May 7. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that a total of 935 cases were verified by May 1, across 30 jurisdictions, while the record for previous years peaked at 1,274 in 2019.

Since the onset of this outbreak in January, there have been 121 hospitalizations, primarily among children under five, according to the CDC. Tragically, three deaths have been reported, two of which involved children, as reported by various sources.

As of May 1, the CDC stated that 29 states had recorded cases, with 12 outbreaks noted. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 702 incidents as of May 6. However, the public health director in Lubbock, Katherine Wells, mentioned that there have been no recent hospitalizations in the area linked to the virus in two weeks. “I hope things are slowing down,” she expressed.

A spokesperson from Health and Human Services (HHS) mentioned that Chief Secretary Robert F. Kennedy has instructed federal agencies to seek additional treatments for measles, beyond just vaccinations. According to reports, the intention here is to aid families by minimizing hospitalization risks and serious complications related to measles, regardless of vaccination status.

He emphasized that this initiative seeks to assist those who have opted against vaccinations while reiterating the CDC’s recommendation for measles, mumps, and rubella shots.

The CDC has not yet provided feedback on requests for comments regarding this situation.
