School Closed Due to Illness Outbreak
On Wednesday, school officials noted over 130 students were absent. Additionally, more than 20 staff members reported symptoms like upset stomachs and vomiting.
The decision to extend the school closure for another day was made “due to a high number of students and staff members still experiencing symptoms,” according to a statement released Thursday.
According to the statement, “District and school leaders felt there wouldn’t be enough students and staff present to ensure a structured and safe learning environment.”
The school consulted with the Medford Board of Health and the Department of Public Health before deciding to remain closed. Health officials conducted inspections on Wednesday and Thursday, concluding that the outbreak wasn’t related to school facilities or kitchen equipment.
Norovirus, known for its high contagiousness, typically causes sudden symptoms, including vomiting, as noted by health authorities.
Roberts Elementary took additional precautions by hiring a private company for a thorough cleaning of the school on Thursday to sanitize classrooms, door handles, kitchen equipment, and frequently touched surfaces.
Classes in all other Medford Public Schools will proceed as scheduled on Friday.
Understanding Norovirus: Prevention and Precaution
While norovirus spreads easily, there are measures to help prevent it. Health recommendations suggest washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as hand sanitizers might not be as effective against this virus.
It’s advised not to prepare food or care for others while experiencing symptoms such as an upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea. It’s best to wait at least 48 hours after symptoms subside before returning to regular activities, especially for those working in environments with vulnerable individuals.
Interestingly, noroviruses are relatively resistant to heat and can survive temperatures up to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
For cleanup, it’s recommended to wear rubber gloves and to properly dispose of any contaminated materials. After disposing of waste, clean the area using a chlorine-bleach solution.
Any potentially contaminated laundry should be washed immediately to reduce risks.
