Colby Hall Resigns from Mediaite Amid Controversy
Colby Hall, the founding editor of the left-leaning media outlet Mediaite, has stepped down following a 30-day suspension related to allegations of quote fabrication.
Last month, Mediaite’s Editor-in-Chief, Joe DePaolo, made the announcement regarding Hall’s suspension. He stated, “We presented our findings to Colby Hall, who contended that the mistakes were simply due to poor aggregation and classification of information, not AI usage. Regardless, this is absolutely unacceptable, and Colby has been suspended from Mediaite while we conduct further inquiries.”
Interestingly, Hall was exposed by fellow members within far-left media. As I noted before, Semafor reported that One Sheet “appears to have blatantly fabricated a quote, incorrectly attributed it to our own John Passantino, and lashed out against our website and newsletter for something we never did.”
Semafor also indicated that since the launch of One Sheet, misinformation has proliferated, impacting outlets like CNN and Fox News. The idea is, perhaps, that people misled into paying for one-sheets were misinformed about the source of various quotes. It’s hard to imagine anyone being foolish enough to read Mediaite without paying for it.
Semafor summed up the situation as “a series of incidents involving misinformation and fabricated quotes.”
It seems DePaolo’s “further investigation” didn’t bode well for Hall, who announced he would be leaving Mediaite to focus more on Substack.
“After 15 years as Mediaite’s founding editor, I am stepping away from the site I helped establish, which has consumed my attention for over a decade,” Hall stated last week. “This decision follows editorial errors in the One Sheet newsletter that surfaced in April. I addressed those issues previously, and I stand by my statements at that time.”
Interestingly, the suspension was later lifted. He reflected, “What I didn’t anticipate during the suspension in April was that this past month would become one of the most significant experiences of my professional life. It provided a much-needed opportunity for my mind to rest.”
He noted that the suspension was “one of the darkest periods” of his career. In a way, it turned out to be beneficial, as it made him realize he had been pushing himself too hard for longer than he cared to acknowledge. Some of what he viewed as professional diligence had actually been burnout masquerading as urgency—whatever that even means.
We all slip up, and we should probably extend some grace when others do. Fabricating quotes? I mean, it’s not great, but mistakes happen. Not indenting paragraphs can lead to accidental plagiarism—I’ve done it. And you might post a misquoted statement, too. But, once those errors occur, it’s crucial to double-check everything since you know you are more prone to missteps. But are they actually making things up?
Hall is reportedly looking forward to consulting and burying himself in Substack, joining a group of others who have found themselves in similar situations, including Jim Acosta, Taylor Lorenz, Ryan Lizza, and Terry Moran…
