Investigation into Sunshine Senior Solutions by Medicare
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has expressed a desire to personally look into a Delray Beach medical supply company following a wave of complaints from seniors nationwide.
More than 30 Medicare beneficiaries reached out to WPTV, claiming that Sunshine Senior Solutions improperly billed Medicare for medical supplies they neither needed nor received. Over 20 of these individuals provided Medicare statements and explanations of benefits to WPTV’s Principal Investigator Jamie Ostroff. This particular matter is estimated to have cost Sunshine Senior Solutions around $400,000.
Reviewing the documents, it appears that Medicare didn’t cover the full amount of the claims. Many beneficiaries indicated that their Gap Insurance hadn’t settled the bills with Sunshine Senior Solutions and flagged these charges as potential fraud.
During an interview regarding Medicare’s open enrollment, Ostrov raised these issues with Dr. Oz, who voiced his displeasure with the prolonged investigation timeline and offered to travel to South Florida to tackle the situation personally.
“Jamie, I love you. It’s truly a blessing to pursue this further,” Oz remarked. “It frustrates me as well. If you don’t mind, I’d really like to delve deeper into this issue with you.”
A number of Medicare beneficiaries noted that they reported the suspicious bills to Medicare’s fraud hotline after receiving unexpected charges from Sunshine Senior Solutions for catheters and other medical equipment that was never ordered or delivered.
“I was a bit taken aback,” admitted Marty Rowe, a Medicare recipient from a Cleveland suburb. “I thought maybe we could put a stop to this, but it seems like the investigation is going to take quite some time.”
Peggy Foley, along with her pickleball friends from the Chicago area, also received bills from Sunshine Senior Solutions and reported the situation to the fraud hotline.
“They said they are aware of the issue and are looking into it,” Foley shared.
Similarly, Jim Dente from northwest New Jersey reported receiving the same kind of information.
“I’ve heard there’s an investigation, but that’s about it,” Dente added.
Dr. Oz conveyed his frustrations regarding the existing system which seems to prioritize identifying and prosecuting fraud over immediately halting fraudulent payments.
“What occurs is that when they get a tip like this, the Department of Justice spends years figuring out who the culprits are,” Oz explained. “Then they take steps to close their operations. But in the meantime, billions of dollars get wasted. We can’t let this continue. I’m more focused on preventing losses than catching the fraudsters.”
Oz stressed that his priority is to stop fraudulent payments without waiting for lengthy legal processes to wrap up.
“I want the payments to halt. Sure, pursue the criminals, but don’t let them exploit American taxpayers while the system works through the legalities,” he stated.
Medicare mentioned that it can suspend payments to a healthcare provider if credible allegations of fraud surface. However, they refrained from commenting on whether Sunshine Senior Solutions is involved in such a situation, citing potential risks to the ongoing investigation.
As of now, no employees from Sunshine Senior Solutions have faced criminal charges. Federal authorities, including Medicare, have remained tight-lipped about the existence of any investigation.
Sunshine Senior Solutions is currently not present in Medicare’s medical device provider database. All healthcare providers receiving Medicare reimbursement must be registered and certified with the agency, and this company was added earlier this year.
When Ostrov visited their office suite in Delray Beach earlier this year, the person who answered the door was unable to address questions or identify the management. This individual directed Ostrov to a phone number stuck to the door, which matches the number found on their website.
Repeated attempts to contact Sunshine Senior Solutions have resulted in unanswered calls.
