Meet Ryan Williams, the 17-year-old Alabama wide reciever phenom taking college football by storm

When it comes to true freshman wide receivers in the 2024 recruiting class, this college football season has seen some impressive talent so far.

The No. 1 player for the entire cycle was Jeremiah Smith, a five-star player from Ohio State. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound wide receiver, has already been compared to some of the best receivers of all time and solidified himself as the Buckeyes' top wideout as a true freshman.

But he's not the only true freshman to take college football by storm. Ryan Williams, a 17-year-old freshman who was considered the No. 2 receiver in the 2024 class, burst onto the scene and took over a key role for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Williams' story is unique. Not only is he one of the youngest players in college football, but the five-star player didn't enroll at the University of Alabama until the summer, so he wasn't expected to step into this type of role so early. Many of the best recruits often enroll early at their respective schools.

But it didn't take long for the five-star freshman to make his mark. He was a consistent playmaker in fall camp and was selected as Alabama's opening day starter at a position of need.

In his first game in college, Williams' stat line was pretty casual. He had just two catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Crimson Tide to a 63-0 victory over Western Kentucky.

Fast forward through the first four weeks of the season, and the wideout led Alabama in receptions, yards and touchdowns with 10 grabs for 285 yards and four scores. The explosive Williams quickly developed a rapport with star quarterback Jalen Milroe, who threw half of his touchdown passes to the freshman wideout.

And despite all the commotion, the 17-year-old managed to play with composure, which was crucial to his early success at Alabama.

“There’s a lot of hype around; [Ryan Williams]But I think he just deals with it in a very graceful way,” Alabama head coach Karen DeBoer said earlier this week.

Already a national sensation, Williams has drawn the attention of opposing coaches, and ahead of this weekend's heated matchup between the SEC's top two teams, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart announced that the 17-year-old Williams I had nothing but praise for him.

“He's in the same position as the players that have played against them in the past,” Smart said this week. “Very fast, talented, confident on the ball, great ball skills, great quickness. He's a track and field athlete who was elite as a junior. He came out and performed at a high level already. I don't think he is very anxious or nervous.”

Williams, who currently has 285 yards in four games, is expected to break the 1,000-yard barrier as a true freshman, something he hasn't done since Amari Cooper attended Alabama.

Heading into this weekend, Williams will face the toughest matchup of his young career as the Crimson Tide take on the Georgia Bulldogs at home in a battle of the top four teams in the country.

With one of the top defenses in the country, Georgia will no doubt keep an eye on the freshman phenom, who is ready for the challenge ahead.

“I just want to maintain the standard we've been at,” Williams said. Tuscaloosa News. “Do what they want for my Tide fans. All I can do is do what's best for me.”

Williams is already on the national stage, but the spotlight will shine brightly on him Saturday night, where a new challenge (and perhaps a new milestone) awaits him.
