Virginia’s Historic Mega Millions Win
The recent Mega Millions jackpot of $348 million marks a significant milestone for Virginia, being the state’s largest lottery prize to date. Earlier this month, the winners decided to share their plans for this newfound wealth.
Opting for privacy, the ticket holders informed lottery officials that they intend to purchase, among other things, a Zero Radius riding lawn mower, usually priced around $3,000. This was revealed following the historic announcement on August 14th.
The winners claimed their prize at the Virginia lottery’s Richmond office roughly four weeks after buying their tickets at the E&C VA convenience store in Burgess on June 27th. Instead of taking the $348 million spread over 30 years, they chose a lump sum payment of $155.6 million.
Interestingly, Virginia law permits lottery winners to remain anonymous if their winnings exceed $1 million or if the winner consents to reveal their identity. Currently, 18 states have varying laws aimed at protecting the identities of jackpot winners. Some states have specific prize thresholds while others, like New Jersey, maintain anonymity regardless of the amount won.
The convenience store where the winning ticket was sold received a $50,000 bonus for facilitating this jackpot victory.
Since Mega Millions began in 2002, Virginia has produced a total of ten winners. Interestingly, before this recent win, the record was held by retired truck driver Jr. Triplet, who won $239 million back in 2004.
Currently, the Mega Millions jackpot has reset to $277 million after the last drawing on June 27th yielded no winners, which is quite enticing, really.
After a ticket price increase from $2 to $5 — part of a redesign aiming to attract more players — the lottery has been receiving positive feedback, with larger jackpots and improved prizes for non-jackpot winners. Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot has surged to an impressive $950 million, marking the sixth-largest prize in the game’s history.
