Former USWNT player Megan Rapinoe and WNBA icon Sue Bird have announced their separation after nearly ten years together.
They began dating in 2017, according to sources. Even though they share similar backgrounds and political beliefs, their relationship didn’t last.
In a joint post on Instagram, the couple explained, “There’s really no smooth or easy way to share this news. After much consideration, we have made the decision to separate as a couple.” They emphasized that it wasn’t an easy choice, but one made with love, respect, and care for each other. “We have shared our entire lives together over the past 10 years, both the big moments and the quiet ones, and that is something we will always carry with us.”
Honestly, I didn’t see this coming on what seemed like a lovely Friday afternoon—the breakup of such a prominent sports couple caught me off guard.
If I had anticipated it, I wouldn’t be writing this. Instead, I’d probably be out purchasing Powerball tickets right now.
Now, I know not everyone is a fan of Megan Rapinoe, given her, um, “outspoken” nature, but I wouldn’t root for someone’s marriage to end. That just doesn’t sit right with me.
Relationships like this are tough not just for the individuals involved, but also for their friends and family.
I think it’s important to wish them happiness, regardless of opinions. It shouldn’t be that complicated, right?
I hope they both find their way moving forward.
But, honestly, one immediate thought popped into my head as I heard about their split—what will happen to their podcast?
The two have been known for discussing various hot-button topics on their show, like critiquing members of the U.S. men’s hockey team for some questionable behavior, or calling out the IOC on its policies in women’s sports.
Regrettably, they mentioned they would no longer be doing weekly recordings.
