It seems the situation between Meghan Markle and Edward Enninful, the former editor of British Vogue, is more complex than just a disagreement over a cover from 2022.
Sources have indicated that Markle presented Enninful with a demanding list of requests, hoping to catch the attention of Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
A recent report mentioned that they were coordinating Markle’s keynote address for the One Young World Summit in Manchester along with the UK Vogue issue, which included various features in both print and digital formats.
However, there was a snag—Markle wanted to be on the cover, but Enninful had already committed to featuring model Linda Evangelista.
From what I understand, it wasn’t solely a scheduling issue; Markle was looking for what she termed a “global cover,” wanting to appear on both the US and UK editions simultaneously.
Apparently, she even arranged a Zoom call with Wintour to pitch her vision.
But, sources said, Wintour wasn’t keen on the idea. The magazine had already lined up Serena Williams to be its cover star that month, and Markle wasn’t in the running.
Actually, it seems Adele holds the distinction of being the only celebrity to grace both the US and UK covers at the same time, back in November 2021.
Interestingly, another source mentioned that Markle didn’t actually ask for a cover and that Vogue had sought her out several times following her marriage to Prince Harry.
Reportedly, Enninful had previously invited Markle to cover the “Forces For Change” issue in 2019, but she opted to guest edit instead.
In September 2022, Markle did end up with a digital cover for The Cut in New York Magazine, sharing the spotlight with Megan The Stallion.
She was also slated to feature on the cover of Variety that month, but the release was postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Despite the earlier tensions, sources told the Daily Mail that Markle and Enninful, who departed from British Vogue in February, are no longer on good terms.
There were expectations from Markle’s team for a physical or at least a digital cover, but Enninful was unable to meet those hopes, as he was already committed to another project.
It sounds like he became quite frustrated, feeling the pressure from his role at Condé Nast. The process, according to insiders, had become quite challenging. While Enninful could offer significant features within the magazine, Markle was apparently not satisfied.
Nonetheless, Page 6 has reported that Markle and Enninful’s relationship has been quite amicable over the years, with them sharing birthday wishes and exchanging gifts like flowers.
