Mehdi Hasan announced Sunday night that he is leaving MSNBC permanently after the network announced plans to cancel his late-night opinion show last year.
“I decided it was time to look for a new challenge,” he said. during his final episode. “Tonight is more than just the final episode of 'The Mehdi Hasan Show.' Today is my last day at MSNBC. Yes, I have decided to quit.”
MSNBC told staff in November that it was canceling Mr. Hasan's Sunday night opinion show as part of a broader overhaul of its weekend programming. His slot will be taken over during the second hour of Ayman Mohieldin's show.
Hassan was previously scheduled to remain with the network as an on-camera analyst and stand-in host after the show's cancellation. But at his final show on Sunday, he said he was pursuing a new path.
“I’ve really enjoyed this live show on MSNBC for the past three years, thanks to a great team of producers,” he said. “And it's an honor to have you guys watching from home. It's been a lot of fun. But as we start 2024, the election is coming, the war is still going on, and to be honest, the Trump trial… There are too many to even keep track of, and with this show coming to an end, I decided it was time to look for a new challenge.”
Hassan was hired by the station in 2021 as the Sunday night show host.
MSNBC confirmed his departure to The Hill.
