Mel Gibson Reveals Partnership with Lionsgate for The Passion of the Christ Sequel

Mel Gibson has announced that Lionsgate will be partnering with him and his filmmaking partner, Bruce Davy, for the eagerly awaited sequel to The Passion of Christ. This marks a return to collaboration with the studio that previously released Gibson’s films Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk. While a release date hasn’t been confirmed, the excitement surrounding the new project is palpable.

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, emphasized the significance of this film. He described it as a deeply personal showcase for Gibson’s talents as a filmmaker and noted that their relationship stretches back three decades. Fogelson’s enthusiasm about partnering again for this groundbreaking cinematic event is evident.

In Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson depicted the faith-driven story of Desmond Doss, a WWII medic who managed to save many lives without any weapons. The film earned two Oscars. This year, with Flight Risk, Gibson returned to the director’s chair, setting his suspenseful thriller on a small Alaska plane.

Gibson praised Lionsgate’s innovative spirit, acknowledging how it has long inspired him. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with Fogelson and his team, appreciating their commitment to passionate projects.

Looking back, Gibson’s 2004 film The Passion of Christ set records as the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time, debuting with $83 million and concluding its domestic run with $370 million. The original depicted the last days of Jesus and culminated with his resurrection. The anticipated sequel is expected to explore the period between the crucifixion and the resurrection more closely.

Earlier this year, Gibson shared insights on his perspective regarding the gospel. He told podcaster Joe Rogan that he views it as verifiable history rather than just a fairy tale, defending the existence of Jesus as a historical fact based on the accounts of those who witnessed events.
