Mel Gibson on Upcoming Sequel to The Passion of the Christ

Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson has shared some insights about The Resurrection of the Christ, which is the anticipated two-part sequel to his 2004 hit, The Passion of the Christ. He believes this new film will address some of the narrative gaps left in the Bible concerning Jesus Christ’s life and works.

According to Gibson, the Gospels of Mark, Luke, and John, while providing a synoptic view, only cover select aspects of Jesus’s life. He expressed this view during an interview with the Christian Post, mentioning that the synoptic Gospels don’t encompass everything. “John even suggests that there were so many things [Jesus] said and did that not even the libraries of the world could contain them,” he said, pointing out that significant portions of Jesus’s life are untold.

Gibson plans to make some thoughtful interpretations about what Jesus may have been doing during the unchronicled moments in the Bible but clarified that he wouldn’t contradict orthodox teachings regarding Christ’s narrative.

“One can look at these things and go, ‘I wonder what was around that?’ and try to analyze those things,” he elaborated, “not to contradict established beliefs but to enhance them. I think it’s about revealing more for everyone and, hopefully, they’ll find some surprising elements.”

Set to be released on May 6, 2027, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One will explore both the supernatural aspects mentioned in the Bible and the earthly experiences of Jesus, detailing his life, teaching, death, and resurrection. The combined budget for the two-part film will be around $100 million, a considerable increase from the $30 million budget of the original film, which managed to gross $370 million domestically and $610 million globally.

“With more funding, you really get to use more resources, which allows for bigger and better things,” Gibson explained. And those resources will indeed showcase remarkable visuals, including depictions of angels falling from grace.

“There’s some pretty intense stuff,” Gibson remarked in a previous interview. “To truly convey the story, you have to begin with the fall of the angels, which takes you to another realm, perhaps even hell or Sheol from the Old Testament.”

He added, “You’ll explore various dimensions, from the firmament before creation to different levels of hell. It’s a bit of a journey, not just confined to earth.”

Reflecting on the emotional tone of the films, Gibson stated, “I believe these films will have a particularly inspiring quality. They’ll showcase both joyful and challenging moments. The apostles faced numerous trials, but they ultimately triumphed, and that’s a message of hope. I hope viewers feel that it was all worthwhile.”
