Mel Owens from 'Golden Bachelor' changes his stance on dating preferences, now believes there's 'no age for love'

Mel Owens’ Journey as the New Lead on “The Golden Bachelor”

Mel Owens was eager to take on the role of the new lead in ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor.” However, things took an unexpected turn when the former NFL linebacker mentioned intentions to filter out contestants who, well, were a bit older than 60.

During a recent appearance on the “In the Trench” podcast, Owens spoke candidly to Fox News Digital about the age limits he suggested prior to his casting. He shared, “When I expressed my preferences, I simply said, ’45-60.’ It’s a straightforward expectation, right?” He continued, recounting a lunch with the executive producer, who reminded him that this wasn’t “silver singles,” and assured him that the women would be attractive.

Owens went on to mention that he specifically requested to avoid contestants with “artificial waistlines and wigs.”

In an exclusive chat with Fox News Digital, Owens opened up about building trust with the contestants and shared his belief that love knows no age.

“On my first night, I felt it was necessary to apologize to the women,” he reflected, considering his long marriage. “My experiences revolved around my wife and friends, so this was unfamiliar territory for me.” He expressed his commitment to being genuine and respectful, taking time to apologize both collectively and individually to the contestants.

When asked about his earlier remarks, Owens explained that his perspective on age came from his own experiences, rather than the show’s history. He admitted, “For me, the right age range seemed to be 45-60, based on my dating life.” He noted his lack of awareness regarding the original “Golden Bachelor,” Gerry Turner’s marital status changes.

Despite facing criticism, Owens remained hopeful that his comments wouldn’t negatively impact his connection with the audience. “The women are accomplished, beautiful, and refined; I don’t foresee any issues,” he stated confidently.

Reflecting on his views of love, he emphasized that age doesn’t play a role in genuine connections. “When you watch the show, I hope you feel happy and surprised,” he noted.

In July, former “Golden Bachelor” Gerry Turner expressed concern that Owens might not fully appreciate the depth of relationships with older women. “It would be a shame if he doesn’t recognize the unique qualities that come with loving someone over 60,” Turner stated emphatically.

He continued, “People I met during my season were gifts, each bringing their unique attributes.” Turner advised that age should be set aside to truly connect with individuals, reminding Owens that some of his remarks might need context.

Owens is still somewhat private on whether he found love this season, yet he feels he’s developing a richer understanding of what love entails. “To me, love is about compatibility—finding joy and learning with someone,” he shared. “And that’s what resonates with me.” The new season of “The Golden Bachelor” is set to premiere on September 24th.
