Former first lady Melania Trump announced her mother's death in a post on X Tuesday.
President Trump: “It is with deep sadness that I announce the death of my beloved mother, Amalia.'' Said In her post. “Amalia Knahus was a strong woman who always conducted herself with grace, warmth and dignity. She was completely devoted to her husband, daughter, grandson and son-in-law. We will miss her immeasurably and will continue to honor and love her legacy.”
The former first lady is from Slovenia.She is the second first lady born outside the United States
President Trump spoke at a naturalization ceremony at the National Archives last month, calling the path to U.S. citizenship “difficult.” She also said she felt a “tremendous sense of belonging” after she took the U.S. Oath of Allegiance.
“For me, reaching the American citizenship milestone was a sunrise of confirmation,” she said. “In that exact moment, I threw away forever the burden of whether or not I could live in the United States. I hope you feel the same sense of peace right now.”
President Trump said when he arrived in this country, he knew he wanted to call it his permanent home. She was naturalized in her 2006 and her parents were also naturalized in her 2018.
