Documentary on Melania Trump Debuts on Amazon Prime
“Melania,” a documentary highlighting the life of first lady Melania Trump, made a notable debut at the top of Amazon Prime’s streaming charts after its release earlier this week.
This film covers a period of 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration and became available on streaming platforms on Monday. Reports from various sources indicate it has been well-received.
The first lady acknowledged this accomplishment with a post on social media shortly thereafter.
As of Thursday, “Melania” was the third most-watched title on Amazon Prime, following “Scarpetta,” which premiered on Wednesday, and “Young Sherlock,” released in March.
The documentary initially opened in theaters on January 30, generating more than $7 million—marking the highest opening gross for a documentary in over a decade.
Details reveal that Amazon MGM Studios invested around $40 million in the film, alongside an additional $35 million for marketing. The studio’s strategy seems to involve recouping costs through licensing agreements and adding the documentary to its Prime Video lineup. There are also plans for a documentary series about Melania directed by Brett Ratner, the same director of the film.
Despite criticism from entertainment reviewers, who labeled the documentary as “propaganda” for the Trump administration, it has received a remarkable audience approval rating of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, according to viewer responses.
Kevin Wilson, Head of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Amazon MGM, remarked on the film’s success reiterating the potential long-term benefits not just for the movie but also for their future projects in both theaters and streaming platforms.
