White House Expands Honey Program with New Beehive
First Lady Melania Trump has announced an enhancement to the White House honey initiative by introducing beehives on the south grounds of the White House.
The new beehive, fully operational and crafted by skilled local artisans to mimic the White House aesthetic, is part of an effort to bolster the existing colonies. This expansion was funded through the Trust for the National Mall. Together, these hives aim to produce specialty honey while aiding in the pollination of plants in various gardens around the White House and the National Mall.
According to the White House, existing hives can reach a population of up to 70,000 bees during the summer months and produce between 200 to 225 pounds of honey each year. With the addition of the new hive, production is anticipated to increase by approximately 30 pounds annually.
Charlie Brandt, a carpenter at the White House, has been keeping bees on the property since 2009, initially as a hobby. Since then, the honey produced has contributed to the pollination of a vegetable garden established by former First Lady Michelle Obama in the same year.
White House honey is noted for its light flavor profile, incorporating clover, basswood, and subtle citrus hints. It is used by chefs in various culinary applications, from sweetening teas to making salad dressings and desserts. Additionally, the honey finds its way into official gifts from the president and first lady and is donated to food kitchens.
