Melania Trump was the first to unveil a new stamp honoring Barbara Bush during a ceremony at the White House, marking a moment that, while significant, comes amid her complicated ties with President Trump and other members of the former First Family.
During the Thursday event, the First Lady remarked, “Barbara’s steadfast conviction, dignity, and loyalty have left a remarkable imprint on our hearts and history.” The stamp, issued by the US Post Office, features an image of Barbara Bush, the wife of President George H.W. Bush.
“While Mrs. Bush’s legacy is rooted in tradition, it certainly comes with its own set of customs,” Trump mentioned.
She highlighted Bush’s advocacy for literacy, asserting that Barbara also focused on women’s empowerment, shifted conversations around AIDS, and stood up for gay rights. “She fought for what women need in our society, whether they are CEOs or homemakers,” Trump added.
Barbara Bush, who was the mother of former President George W. Bush, passed away in 2018 at the age of 92.
The stamp features a beloved portrait of Bush from 1995, created by artist Chas Fagan. In this painting, she is depicted wearing her iconic multi-strand pearl necklace and a subtle smile.
Among the attendees at the White House ceremony were some of Barbara Bush’s family, including her daughter Doro Bush Koch, but former President George W. Bush was notably absent. A spokesperson for him did not provide comment regarding his absence before the event.
Over the years, tensions between Donald Trump and various Bush family members have been evident. A 2019 documentary revealed that the former first lady once described Trump as a “symbol of greed.” Trump, in turn, expressed hopes that Barbara would be critiqued during the 2016 GOP primary, considering the treatment of her son, Jeb Bush, during that campaign.
“I know she may find me awkward, but she has every reason to. Look at how I treated her sons,” Trump remarked about Bush.
In 2018, he also criticized George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, labeling it “the worst decision ever made.”
The 43rd President did not back Trump during last year’s presidential race against President Harris.
Doro Bush Koch, however, expressed gratitude towards Melania Trump for hosting the event, stating, “I’m truly thankful that we were welcomed at the White House for this meaningful occasion.”
“The stamp beautifully captures my mother’s calm and dignified essence,” Bush Koch reflected, becoming emotional as she spoke about her parents’ relationship.
“It’s unusual for my mom to be commemorated on a stamp, and she’d probably wonder what all the fuss is about,” she said. “But from my entire family, we’re all very proud and thankful for this tribute.”
Melania Trump concluded, “This commemorative stamp celebrates Barbara Bush’s invaluable contributions as First Lady and her enduring influence on our nation. May it inspire us to act thoughtfully and uphold the values that lead us toward meaningful lives.”
