First Ladies Connect Through Culture During State Visit
In a display of soft diplomacy, First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Madame Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, for a visit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art on Thursday. This outing occurred while President Donald Trump and President Xi held discussions at the White House, focusing on complicated economic, trade, and technology issues between the two nations.
The museum tour followed a formal State Arrival Ceremony, which took place on the South Lawn and featured a military honor cordon, aerial flyover, and performances by military bands.
Upon their arrival at the museum, which boasts over 45,000 pieces reflecting thousands of years of history, Mrs. Trump and Madame Peng were welcomed by museum staff and docents. They guided the first ladies through exhibitions designed to showcase the historical cultural exchanges between China and America, as well as centuries of Asian artistry.
A significant moment during the visit was the viewing of the Peacock Room in the Freer Gallery of Art, a masterpiece by James McNeill Whistler known for its fusion of Anglo-Asian aesthetics.
As the two first ladies explored, they observed ancient Chinese ceramics, jade artifacts, and exquisite calligraphy. They engaged in discussions about the importance of preserving art and promoting cross-cultural heritage to enhance understanding between their countries.
The visit concluded with a musical performance by a youth choir from Hope Chinese School, which sang “Jasmine Flower” and “Songs & Smiles.” According to the White House, the performance added a joyful touch to the day’s events.
Both women, one a former fashion model and the other a celebrated soprano, exuded a glamorous presence that captured the attention of those around them. Despite their differing approaches to public engagement—Mrs. Trump usually opting for a more reserved role compared to Madame Peng’s visibility—the two displayed a warm and seamless rapport throughout their time together.
