New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday that Melissa Aviles Ramos, vice chair of the city's Board of Education, will succeed retiring David Banks as chair of the board.
Aviles Ramos, vice chancellor for family and community engagement and external relations, will assume the role at the end of the year, when Banks is expected to retire.
“Melissa is a veteran of New York City Public Schools and has been involved in education her entire life. She brings a wealth of experience fostering community engagement and supporting families to her new role, having served in numerous roles within the public school system. I believe she is the right fit at this time,” Adams said.
Aviles Ramos began teaching in New York City schools in 2007 but left the city's school system earlier this year to enroll at Monroe College.
She returned to DOE in July after a brief stint at the university.
News of Banks' retirement comes just weeks after federal agents searched his home and seized his cell phone.
His youngest brother, Terrance Banks, is under investigation for allegedly trying to lobby David Banks for city contracts.
