Melissa Barrera Criticizes Hollywood’s Silence on Palestinian Rights

Mexican actress Melissa Barrera is expressing her frustration with Hollywood’s lack of support for Palestinians and its unwillingness to condemn Hamas, which was responsible for the deaths of over 1,000 innocent people in Israel on October 7, 2023.

In an interview with podcaster Maria Hinojosa, Barrera suggested that she has faced backlash for speaking out in favor of Palestinian rights. Interestingly, she didn’t address Hamas’s attacks that have resulted in the deaths of many Israeli civilians, including children and the elderly.

“Many people have lost their jobs just for asserting that Palestinians have human rights and shouldn’t endure bombings and violence,” she said during the discussion.

“It’s disheartening. I feel there are more pressing interests at play for some powerful individuals, and frankly, it’s sad. They appear indifferent to human lives, doing everything to suppress voices advocating for the right to live, especially for children who deserve to grow up,” she continued.

On a hopeful note, Barrera expressed her belief that many people do care about one another and recognize our shared connections. “We can’t ignore the struggles happening globally just because they’re far away. They’re right in front of us, often without us realizing it,” she added.

Barrera also drew parallels between former President Donald Trump’s deportation strategies and the perceived injustices in Palestine. She claimed that similar tactics, such as surveillance and aggressive policing, are being employed in both contexts.

Hinojosa echoed her sentiments, bringing up issues of “borders, walls, checkpoints.”

Later in the interview, Barrera mentioned that she believes she has faced retribution for her views. “You have to call things what they are, even if it comes with consequences. I’ve dealt with repercussions, but now I’m on Broadway. So who gets the last laugh? I’m still here,” she remarked.

She then spoke about her film, Traces of Homeland, which focuses on a “Mexican-Palestinian family reconnecting with their ancestral homeland,” tying into what she described as Hamas’s propaganda efforts.
