Former Oregon Official May Have Fled Country Amid Felony Charges

Authorities suspect that a former Democratic county chairman from Oregon may have left the United States while facing serious felony allegations.

Melissa Fireside, who served as a Clackamas County Commissioner, allegedly stole $30,000 from her mother’s boyfriend, currently residing in a nursing home. The reported theft occurred in March 2025.

According to prosecutors, during one visit to the nursing home, Fireside accessed the man’s bank account and advised him to contact the bank to reset his online information.

She is accused of withdrawing $29,000 from that account, purportedly to pay back a loan received from state lawmakers. Additionally, there was an unauthorized withdrawal of $1,000 that had recently been deposited into the account.

An investigation was prompted after the man’s daughter reported unusual activity to his credit union.

On October 31, the Oregon Department of Justice indicated that Fireside might have fled the country and stated they would file a motion to revoke her conditional release.

The father of Fireside’s 9-year-old son reached out to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, informing them that his child had been taken out of school. He suggested that his ex-partner might have “apparently fled the country.”

Authorities believe Fireside may have used false identification to enter Mexico and supposedly booked a flight from Mexico to Amsterdam.

Oregon Attorney General Dan Layfield emphasized in a statement that the main priority is ensuring the safety of Fireside’s child. He stated, “We are collaborating closely with law enforcement at both state and federal levels to locate Ms. Fireside and ensure she faces accountability under Oregon law. No one should evade justice by crossing borders.”

Fireside faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree aggravated theft, first-degree theft, computer crime, and first-degree forgery. The conditions of her release mandated that she stay in Oregon unless otherwise authorized.

Her trial was set to commence on December 2. When approached for comment, Fireside’s attorney opted not to provide any details.
