Melissa Jones, a former guard for Baylor University’s women’s basketball team, passed away Friday at her home in Commerce City, Colorado, as reported by her mother, Kathy Jones. She was just 36 years old.
The exact cause of her death hasn’t been revealed.
Jones played for Baylor from 2007 to 2011, helping lead the Bears to the Final Four in 2010 and earning a Big 12 championship the following year. She was recognized as the 2011 Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year and captained the team for her last two seasons.
In honor of her contributions, Baylor has retired her number, 5.
Kathy Jones reflected on her daughter’s time at Baylor, saying it was “the best time of her life.” She mentioned the many fond memories and lasting friendships Melissa made during those years. It’s heartwarming, really, how she stayed connected with so many people.
Kathy also noted Melissa’s close relationship with former Baylor coach, now at LSU, Kim Mulkey. “She loved Coach Mulkey; they had a special bond,” Kathy mentioned. It seems like that connection meant a lot to both of them.
Coach Mulkey described Melissa as the “glue” of the team and emphasized her lasting impact not just on basketball but also at Baylor University. “She was loved by the whole Waco community,” Mulkey stated. “Her energy, hard work, and leadership were exemplary.” Her teammates admired her for her effort, compassion, and unmatched toughness. She truly seemed to bring everyone together.
The Baylor women’s basketball team expressed their condolences, stating, “The Baylor family mourns the loss of 2011 graduate Melissa Jones. Her influence on our women’s basketball program will always be remembered. We ask you to keep the Jones family in your thoughts during this time.”
Former teammate, and Atlanta Dream star, Brittney Griner shared Baylor’s tribute on her social media, honoring Melissa’s memory.
In a heartfelt obituary, Melissa was described as a “bright light,” emphasizing her impact and accomplishments in life. “Known for her warmth and spirit, Melissa was a radiant presence for all who were fortunate to know her,” it read.
She is survived by her mother, her grandmothers, Martha Kimball and Carolyn Jones, her brothers, Matthew, Mark, Michael, along with her nieces and nephews.
