Jane’s Addiction Members Sue Perry Farrell After Onstage Incident
It seems the situation just keeps getting worse.
Members of Jane’s Addiction have taken legal action against their frontman, Perry Farrell, following an altercation during a performance in September 2024. This incident has not only led to the cancellation of their reunion tour but has also caused the band to split.
A 36-page lawsuit filed by band members Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins accuses Farrell of multiple offenses, including assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and breach of fiduciary duty and contract. These details, as noted in court documents, highlight the turmoil within the group.
According to the lawsuit submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the band asserted that they can no longer function due to Farrell’s “sudden, violent outburst.” It seems this altercation has severely impacted not only their professional dynamics but also their ability to work together moving forward.
The fallout from the unexpected scuffle, which took place at the Boston Leader Bank Pavilion, has reportedly forced them to demand payment for unpaid bills related to a canceled tour dubbed “immediate redemption.”
Navarro expressed the personal losses he incurred, stating that the tour’s abrupt end in early September 2024 led him to make some tough decisions, like postponing his wedding in Scotland and losing a $50,000 deposit. He also claimed to have lost around $25,000 a month in disability payments, all due to this unexpected turn of events.
In footage from the concert on September 13, 2024, Farrell appeared to provoke Navarro by singing “Size of the Sea.” Navarro looked visibly confused, raising his arms in an attempt to avoid contact while playing his guitar.
The situation escalated as Farrell threw an elbow at Navarro, prompting crew members and fellow bandmates, including Avery, to intervene with shouts of “Stop!”
The performance was quickly interrupted as crew members assisted Farrell off the stage amid a chaotic scene.
In response to the allegations, Farrell has filed counter-lawsuits against Navarro, Avery, and Perkins, claiming they were involved in a “long-standing bullying campaign.” His own 30-page complaint includes similar charges of assault and battery while asserting that he faced harassment during performances.
Farrell contends that his bandmates’ actions during the Boston show ultimately pushed him over the edge, leading to violent confrontations offstage as well. He expressed feelings of being unfairly targeted, especially after previous accusations about his mental health, which he claims contributed to the band’s split without proper communication.
In terminating their tour and disbanding, the lawsuit seeks damages for physical injuries from the alleged assault, along with compensation for emotional distress and legal fees. It appears the repercussions of that one night have rippled through each member’s personal and professional lives.
