New Reality Show Explores Elite World of Palm Beach
A fresh reality series is shining a light on the intricate dynamics of Palm Beach’s elite social scene—who fits in, who stands out, and who determines who belongs.
Low Mina Ustaev, a standout from Netflix’s “Members Only: Palm Beach,” has been labeled the “Kim Kardashian of Palm Beach.” She pointed out that some locals who claim the show is embarrassing are often the very people being revealed on screen.
“I think those folks who find the show embarrassing are actually reflecting the behavior they exhibit themselves,” Ustaev shared. “It’s a clear depiction of the social pressures one faces in this city.”
The series provides an insider’s view of the exclusive social interactions in Palm Beach, a place Ustaev describes as operating more like an entrenched hierarchy than an open beach town.
She explained how specific access restrictions feel similar to sororities, where it’s crucial to know who to let in and keep out. This, she said, creates an environment filled with judgment and scrutiny, especially for newcomers who don’t fit the usual mold.
“When whispers fly about someone not belonging, it often rests on personal wealth, their choices, or whatever else someone decides to focus on,” Ustaev noted.
Coming from a background as a child refugee from Uzbekistan, Ustaev navigated her way into a successful career across various industries, including real estate, fashion, and music. Still, her rise hasn’t always been welcomed, especially in a town that values pedigree. Her declaration of being “the new Palm Beach” stirred controversy, which she sensed annoyed long-standing residents.
“Palm Beach has a certain legacy, and here I am, breaking norms with my style. People can get a bit defensive about change,” she reflected.
According to Ustaev, shifts are indeed happening. “Whether the locals like it or not, Palm Beach is evolving,” she mentioned, highlighting the influx of new residents drawn to Florida’s appeal. “They just have to embrace it.”
The show frequently highlights Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, a significant members-only establishment in Palm Beach. Ustaev mentioned that discussions about club memberships often pop up when meeting newcomers.
As an entrepreneur and mother managing a considerable real estate portfolio, Ustaev continues to cultivate her career while sharing her musical talents and fashion pursuits.
There’s a sense that the realities depicted in “Members Only” reveal deeper, ongoing dynamics within Palm Beach’s tight-knit social circles. Maria, known professionally as DJ Tumbles, has woven her way through this elite world, reinforcing that it’s not just about money but also about hierarchy and fitting in.
“Palm Beach has its own set of unwritten rules. It’s all about deciding if you’re willing to play the game,” she advised. The repercussions for not adhering to these norms can be significant, from social shunning to isolation.
Maria likened the social network to a “high school lunch table,” where the power dynamics may not always be apparent. “Members Only: Palm Beach” is now streaming on Netflix.
