Men found guilty of cutting down cherished British ‘Sycamore Gap’ tree

Men Found Guilty of Tree Vandalism in Sycamore Gap

On Friday, a jury in Newcastle found two men guilty of cutting down a tree in Sycamore Gap, a striking location in the UK, known for its historical significance. This tree, estimated to be nearly 200 years old, is situated in a picturesque dip along the Hadrian Wall, a site cherished by photographers, hikers, and even those proposing marriage.

Two Men Convicted for Felling Historic Tree

The tree was famously featured in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” Its destruction in September 2023 sparked significant sadness and outrage.

In the courtroom, prosecutor Richard Wright described the actions of Daniel Graham, aged 39, and 32-year-old Adam Calzars as “mindless vandalism.” He explained how they intentionally and skillfully used a chainsaw to sever the tree.

The damage extended beyond the tree itself, affecting parts of the Hadrian Wall, which was built nearly 2,000 years ago and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Traveling from their home about 25 miles away in Carlisle to the Northumberland National Park, both men denied involvement. Despite their claims, they were convicted on two counts of criminal damage.

A sentencing date is set for July 15.

Chief Gale Gilchrist remarked on the tree’s iconic status, noting that it had brought joy to countless visitors over the years. He expressed that in just three minutes, Graham and Calzars had destroyed a piece of historic heritage through callous vandalism.

During the trial, the judge viewed a video titled “Moronic Mission,” which had been recorded on Graham’s phone. Prosecutors alleged that after the act, the men kept wooden wedges as trophies and exchanged messages about the incident, indicating a troubling indifference.

The National Trust, a charity dedicated to conserving the site, mentioned signs of life at the tree’s roots last August, offering a glimmer of hope for its restoration.
