Men’s College World Series: Vance Honeycutt delivers again for UNC against Virginia

University of North Carolina outfielder Vance Honeycutt started the 2024 Men’s College World Series in Omaha without a hit in four at-bats, but went 1-for-5 with one single in Friday’s Men’s College World Series opener against the University of Virginia.

And what a great single it was.

As he has done so many times before, Honeycutt stepped up when it mattered for UNC. In the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied at 2-2 and the winning run coming 90 yards from home plate and the scoreboard showing two outs, Honeycutt smashed a curveball into left field to score the winning run and advance UNC to the winner’s side of Omaha’s first block.

What a great start for UNC’s Clutch.

Or, as we in Chapel Hill like to call him, “Vance Honeycrutch.”

UNC awaits the winner of tonight’s game between two of the most powerful teams in college baseball, Tennessee and Florida State. The Volunteers are good for second in the country as a team with a 1.029 OPS this season. The Seminoles are not far behind, sixth at .975. But the winner of that game will face a different situation in the second meeting.

Mr. Honeyclutch himself.
