The semi-finals for the men’s singles bracket at the 2025 French Open are lined up. The quarter-finals wrapped up on Wednesday, where top-seed Jannik Sinner sailed past Alexander Bublik, while sixth-seed Novak Djokovic triumphed over third-seed Alexander Zverev. Earlier, on Tuesday, Lorenzo Musetti and Carlos Alcaraz also secured their spots by winning their matches.
Both of these victories came at the expense of the last two American competitors in the tournament, Francis Tiafoe and Tommy Paul. Tiafoe, seeded 15th, was taken down by Musetti with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 4-2. Tommy Paul, the 12th seed, didn’t put up much resistance against Alcaraz, losing in straight sets.
This means a rather stark realization: there won’t be any more American winners in this singles bracket for some time. Andy Roddick’s triumph at the 2003 US Open remains the last Grand Slam victory for an American male player.
In the early match on Wednesday, Sinner had no trouble defeating Bublik, finishing him off in straight sets—6-1, 7-5, 6-0. Bublik struggled with six double faults, while Sinner’s first-serve percentage was an impressive 78%, allowing him to control the match easily.
Sinner’s best performance at the French Open prior to this was reaching the semi-finals last year. He had already clinched the Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, so his progress this time brings him one step closer to winning at Roland Garros, which has eluded him so far.
As for Zverev, he managed a quick first-set win against Djokovic, but the Serbian soon turned the tide, clinching the next three sets—4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was a particularly intense moment in the fifth set, with the two engaging in a remarkable 41-shot rally before Djokovic ultimately prevailed.
This victory marked Djokovic’s 100th win at Roland Garros, making him just the second player to achieve this alongside Rafael Nadal. With three titles at Roland Garros, ten in Australia, seven at Wimbledon, and four at the US Open, he has a rich history. However, it’s worth noting that the 38-year-old hasn’t secured a Grand Slam title since the 2023 US Open.
Sinner and Djokovic have faced off eight times, with each player winning four matches. They’ve played once on clay, a match Djokovic won back in 2021, while Sinner took the last three encounters.
On the other hand, Alcaraz and Musetti have gone head-to-head seven times, with Alcaraz winning six of those matches. Musetti’s last win over him was in 2022, and that was on clay. However, Alcaraz has claimed the other four clay encounters. This semi-final will be a first at the Grand Slam level for both players.
Alcaraz is the defending champion at Roland Garros and also holds titles from Wimbledon and the US Open. His journey at the Australian Open this season ended in the quarter-finals, so if he beats Musetti, it’ll be his first Grand Slam final of 2025.
The men’s semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, following the women’s semi-finals on Thursday. The matches will be available for live streaming on TNT and Max.
