‘Mentally exhausting’: Divers battle grief, frigid waters in DC recovery

Police ships on the banks of the Potmax River on Friday, seeking clues to an aerial collision that the investigator killed 67.

DC has no longer experiencing winter explosions in the Arctic, but Polar Ocean Diver Christine Dennison told news that the Potomac conditions were still cruel and cold.

“They work in very cold water,” she said. “It has only a certain amount of time to keep the team in the water before the limbs get cold. They cannot work efficiently.”

No one survived the clashes on Wednesday nights between American Airlines passenger aircraft and the Army Black Hawk Helicopter. The recovery initiative continued on Friday, so more than 40 bodies were withdrawn from the river.

The diver also navigates the strong flow of the river and a large amount of debris.

“There are a lot of movements in the water because there are very large fragments that are hindered by current,” said Denison. “Fragments of the plane -potentially the body is not necessarily yesterday or this morning.”

“So they grow up, find the work, and hand them to a forensic expert,” she added.

Denison said that rescuers are likely to be fighting sadness.

“They have emotions and emotions,” she continued. “This is a very physical job. This is mentally tired and emotionally difficult.”
