FBI Investigations Targeting Republican Groups Revealed

WASHINGTON — Officials in the Biden administration approved FBI investigations into roughly 100 groups and organizations linked to Republicans, potentially even investigating members of Congress.

A document released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Thursday showcases the signatures of former Attorney General Merrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and FBI Director Christopher Wray. This document, dated April 4, 2022, authorized the FBI’s “Arctic Frost” investigation.

Grassley criticized the Biden administration for what he sees as the reckless exercise of government power from the highest ranks, suggesting that this phenomenon has gone unchecked. He declared his intent to pursue further investigations into these revelations.

Documents indicate that the FBI’s Washington field office sought approval from top officials to look into what they described as efforts to disrupt Congress’s certification of the Electoral College and to investigate fraudulent electoral vote submissions from states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin.

Reports and public statements from individuals linked closely to Donald J. Trump appear to have played a role in this investigation.

The FBI director, who resigned just before Trump assumed the presidency again, sent a letter to Garland recommending approval of the investigation. Monaco added her endorsement below Garland’s signature.

The Arctic Frost investigation provided materials that ultimately contributed to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. However, the inquiries also ensnared prominent donors, allies, and even a sitting senator.

According to files released by Grassley, subpoenas were secretly issued for the phone records of nine Republican members of Congress, a move that Grassley labeled as a troubling “weaponization” of federal law enforcement, making comparisons to Watergate.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) voiced her concerns about Smith’s actions, arguing that he was “spying on duly elected officials” and demanded that the former special counsel be disbarred. She referenced how subpoenas were issued in 2023 for cell phone records related to activities from January 4 to January 7, 2021.

In her letter, co-signed by several other Republican lawmakers, she stated, “We have not yet heard any legal basis for the Biden Justice Department to issue subpoenas to obtain these cell phone records.”

Other senators, including Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), were also affected, with their phone records accessed as part of the investigation.

Grassley emphasized that the Arctic Frost operation was much broader than a simple political probe into Trump, alleging it was utilized as a means for partisan agendas within the FBI and Justice Department to advance specific political goals.

President Trump addressed the investigation, claiming it was an attempt to undermine individuals and movements associated with him. He stated, “They have weaponized the Department of Justice against Sleepy Joe Biden’s political enemies, including me!”
