Thunderstorm warnings remain in place across the UK, with up to three inches of rain possible in some areas on Monday.
The yellow warning was issued early on Sunday and will remain in place until Tuesday, covering most of England, eastern Wales and eastern Scotland.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 30 to 40 mm of rain per hour is expected to fall over a wide area on Monday, with 60 to 80 mm of rain in some places, which could cause flash floods.
Senior weather forecaster Marco Petagna said the thunderstorms were the result of a low pressure system hovering over Britain. “Heavy rain, possibly accompanied by thunder, is likely to fall mainly in central and eastern England,” he said.
He added that flooding, lightning strikes, travel delays and cancellations are possible, and there is a small chance of power outages.
Up to 25mm of rain per hour fell in parts of Dorset on Sunday, while temperatures reached 30C in the southeast of England. Temperatures are expected to reach 25C again in the southeast on Monday, but it will feel cooler in the north and west.
Light rain and sunny spells are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, but more thunderstorms are expected across southern England from Thursday.
