Meta’s Long-Term Commitment to Nuclear Energy
Meta has entered a 20-year agreement with nuclear power facilities in Illinois, marking a significant collaboration with the energy sector as it expands into artificial intelligence.
Beginning in June 2027, Meta plans to invest in about 1.1 gigawatts of energy sourced from Constellation Energy’s Clinton Clean Energy Center located in Clinton, Illinois.
For some context, a single gigawatt can supply power to nearly one million homes.
This partnership with Meta aligns with similar moves from tech leaders like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, all of whom have begun supporting nuclear energy due to the increasing electricity demands of large data centers.
“To further our AI goals, we must secure clean and dependable energy,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s global energy director.
Previously, in December, Meta expressed interest in adding between 1 to 4 gigawatts of new nuclear energy across the U.S., distinct from the Clinton plant funding.
This two-year agreement not only aids in the ongoing operation of the plant but also strengthens its initiatives. Although the plant isn’t set to supply power directly to Meta’s data centers, it will support the company’s clean energy objectives in the locality, according to Constellation.
Additionally, the agreement is expected to increase Clinton’s clean energy production by 30 megawatts, sustain about 1,100 high-paying jobs, and generate approximately $13.5 million annually in tax revenue, as stated by Constellation.
While Meta has chosen not to disclose the financial specifics of the deal, Constellation has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
There have been concerns regarding nuclear facilities potentially closing in 2027 as emissions credits are set to expire.
Expressing satisfaction regarding the partnership, one representative highlighted the significance of enhancing existing plants in addition to seeking new energy sources, noting that sometimes the most critical steps involve halting decline.
In a related development, Microsoft also signed a 20-year pact with Constellation aimed at revitalizing the site of the notorious Three Mile Island nuclear incident.
Furthermore, Google recently announced a collaboration with Elementl Power to develop three new nuclear facilities and has previously joined forces with Kairos Power on small modular reactors.
Amazon, too, has made substantial investments, exceeding $500 million in a small modular reactor project, and has acquired a data center connected to the Susquehanna nuclear facility.
Meta joined the ranks of these tech companies in March, committing to a global expansion of nuclear energy support by 2050.
On the government front, efforts are underway to encourage nuclear plant development. Last month, President Trump enacted four executive orders aimed at expediting the construction of such facilities, including small modular reactors.
One of the newly enacted rules mandates that regulators must act within 18 months to approve applications for new reactors.
The White House’s ambition includes increasing the number of U.S. nuclear facilities, aspiring to raise output from around 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050.
