Metaplatform has canceled plans for a premium mixed reality headset that was intended to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. Reported information Friday.
The company told employees in its Reality Labs division to stop work on the device this week after a product review meeting, the report quoted two Meta employees as saying.
The canceled device was reportedly internally codenamed “La Jolla” and was set to be launched in 2027. The device was expected to feature an ultra-high resolution screen called Micro OLED, the same display technology used in Vision Pros.
The virtual reality and mixed reality headset market received new attention last year with Apple’s entry into the market, but sales of its Vision Pro were slow due to its high price tag of $3,500.
Meta’s Reality Labs division, responsible for developing and marketing the Quest series of headsets, has suffered billions of dollars in losses.
Still, CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the future of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

The existing Quest headset line includes the Quest 2, which retails for $200, and the Quest 3, which retails for $500.
Meta stopped production of the Quest Pro (its most expensive headset, selling for $999) in 2023 after facing sluggish sales and poor reviews, according to a report from Information.
Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
