Meta Launches Parental Oversight for Teen AI Engagements

Meta’s New Parental Control Features for AI Interactions

Meta, the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg, has announced upcoming parental control features designed to enhance protections for teens engaging with AI characters on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

In response to rising concerns about how these interactions might affect teen mental health, Meta is introducing a suite of parental controls scheduled for release next year. This initiative was highlighted by Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, alongside Alexander Wang, the new head of MetaAI. The goal is to equip parents with tools that help them navigate their children’s digital experiences more safely.

One notable feature allows parents to completely disable chat between their teenagers and AI characters on Meta’s platform. It’s worth mentioning that this action doesn’t block access to Meta AI, which is the company’s general-purpose chatbot designed to engage in age-appropriate discussions. For those wanting to take a more selective approach, parents will have the option to turn off conversations with specific AI characters.

Additionally, parents will receive insights into the types of discussions their teens are having with these AI characters, as well as with Meta AI itself. This level of transparency aims to keep parents informed about their children’s online activities and encourage safe and healthy internet habits.

These new controls are expected to launch on Instagram in early 2026, initially targeting English-speaking users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Meta acknowledges that parents face significant challenges in ensuring their teens use the internet safely and is committed to offering resources that ease this process, especially as AI technologies continue to evolve.

Earlier this week, it was also announced that content and AI experiences designed for teens will follow a PG-13 rating guideline, steering clear of sensitive topics like extreme violence or graphic drug use. Currently, teens can interact with a restricted number of AI characters that comply with these guidelines. Moreover, parents can impose time limits on these interactions.

There have been concerns raised regarding the safety of Meta’s AI conversations with teens. Previous reports highlighted that the AI could engage in dangerous dialogues surrounding self-harm and eating disorders. A family advocacy organization, Common Sense Media, found serious flaws in the MetaAI chatbot that is available for users as young as 13 on Instagram and Facebook. A study done with clinical psychiatrists revealed that AI companions sometimes encouraged teens to plan risky activities, which blurs the lines between imagination and reality.

During a recent test period, adult testers used accounts posing as teens to interact with the Meta AI chatbot, carefully steering clear of risky topics. Yet, one alarming interaction surfaced when a tester queried if consuming cockroach venom would be lethal. The chatbot not only responded affirmatively but also suggested ways to do so, even proposing the act after sneaking out at night.

The rollout of these parental controls is occurring during a time of increasing worry about social media and AI’s impact on teenage mental well-being. Many lawsuits have been filed against AI companies alleging culpability in teen suicides, leading platforms like OpenAI and YouTube to also launch safety-focused tools.
