Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is attempting to attract OpenAI talent with bonuses totaling $100 million

Meta’s Attempt to Recruit OpenAI Talent

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently revealed that Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is actively trying to recruit senior OpenAI employees. This recruitment involves offering substantial signing bonuses, reportedly up to $100 million, along with generous annual compensation packages to attract key developers from the ChatGPT team.

The competition for AI talent is reportedly heating up, and Altman noted during a podcast that Meta has attempted to hire numerous individuals from OpenAI, though he claims that none of their top talents have accepted those offers so far.

Altman mentioned that Meta views OpenAI as its primary rival. He pointed out that Meta’s current AI initiatives have not produced the expected outcomes, expressing, “Their current AI efforts aren’t working as well as they wanted.” Despite this, he maintains a level of respect for their ongoing endeavors in the field.

Recently, there have been reports indicating that Meta has postponed the launch of its latest AI model, raising questions about its capabilities. Sources have also suggested that Zuckerberg is willing to invest heavily to secure top talent in the competitive AI landscape.

In a significant move, Scale AI’s founder, Alexandr Wang, recently announced his transition to Meta as part of a $14.3 billion deal, which includes Facebook acquiring a 49% stake in the startup. A few employees from Scale AI will also be joining Meta, with Wang expected to lead a lab focusing on advanced AI systems.

Additionally, Meta has attracted other prominent AI researchers, including Jack Rae from Google’s AI Research unit, DeepMind.

However, Altman criticized Meta’s approach, suggesting that simply offering large compensation packages does not foster a culture of innovation. He stated, “I think there are a lot of people. I think Meta will be a new person who says, ‘I’m just trying to copy OpenAI’.” In his view, this strategy is unlikely to succeed in the long run.

On the flip side, some analysts believe that Meta is effectively contributing to AI development. Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, commented that Meta is essentially laying the groundwork for open-source AI growth. He suggested that the company’s significant investments will bolster its capabilities in developing large-scale models.
