Meta’s Ambitious AI Plans in the Works
On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Meta is ramping up its efforts in artificial intelligence. The company plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars to establish several large AI data centers as it competes for top engineering talent.
Meta stands out as one of the major tech firms actively seeking significant partnerships and has been offering lucrative salary packages to attract top talent in recent months.
After experiencing a key staff exit, Meta formed a new division named Superintelligence Labs, which will oversee its AI initiatives, including the recently launched Llama 4 model. This division aims to create new revenue streams through various AI applications, advertising tools, and even smart glasses.
In a post on Threads, Zuckerberg emphasized the strengths of Meta’s advertising business to justify the large expenditures, addressing concerns from tech investors about the potential returns. “We have capital from our business to do this,” he stated, referencing a report that described Meta as the first lab to activate a super cluster exceeding one gigawatt.
Zuckerberg shared that Meta is planning to build multiple mega data center clusters to bolster its AI ambitions. The first cluster, dubbed Prometheus, is believed to be operational by 2026, followed by another, known as Hyperion, which may expand up to 5 gigawatts in the coming years, along with additional clusters in development.
Despite a slight rise of 1% in stock trading, Meta’s shares have increased over 20% this year alone.
Leading the aggressive talent acquisition at the Superintelligence Lab, Zuckerberg has enlisted former scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, especially after a significant investment of $14.3 billion. Moreover, Meta has extended offers to purchase funds from Friedman and tech investor Daniel Gross’ limited partner, according to sources.
Looking ahead, the company anticipates raising its capital expenditures for 2025 from $64 billion to $72 billion, aiming to fortify its position against competitors like OpenAI and Google.
