A recent study suggests that metformin, a widely prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes, may help slow age-related vision decline. The research found that diabetics aged 55 and older who used metformin were 37% less likely to develop intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) over a five-year span compared to those who did not.
Conducted by researchers at the University of Liverpool, the study analyzed eye photos from 2,000 individuals who had regular check-ups for diabetic eye disease. They examined these images to determine the presence and severity of AMD, while also considering various factors like age, gender, and diabetes duration that could influence the outcomes.
Nick Bear, an ophthalmologist who led the study, highlighted the significance of these findings, noting that most AMD sufferers do not receive treatment. He mentioned that further clinical trials are essential to test metformin’s potential as a treatment for AMD, implying it could greatly benefit many individuals’ eyesight.
However, while the results appear promising, the observational nature of the study means it doesn’t definitively prove that metformin is the cause of improved eye health. It’s also important to note that the research exclusively involved diabetic patients, leaving uncertainty regarding the drug’s effects on non-diabetics. Additionally, the study lacked information on the specific doses of metformin and adherence to prescriptions among the participants.
Metformin is a low-cost drug that has been utilized to control blood sugar levels. Scientists believe its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects might help safeguard the retina, although it can cause side effects like gastrointestinal discomfort and vitamin B12 deficiency in some users.
