Recovery Updates for Luis Robert Jr. and Mets’ Strategy

PHILADELPHIA — There’s a chance Louis Robert Jr. may be back with the Mets for their upcoming series against Milwaukee, which would give the team a bit of a surplus in outfielders.

“He’s improving day by day,” interim manager Andy Green mentioned on Saturday after the Mets’ defeat to the Phillies.

The Mets brought Robert in last winter to fill the center field position, but during his time on the disabled list with a herniated lumbar disc, rookie AJ Ewing has shone brightly, alongside fellow newcomers Carson Benge and Juan Soto in the outfield.

So, what does this mean for Robert?

“Everyone is going to get playing time,” Green responded. “This approach suits us well from a matchup perspective. We’ve got two young players we’re really positive about. It’s their first significant professional season, and they’ll get one day off each week as we move through the grueling summer. That’ll benefit them.”

“We’re thrilled to have some strong players returning,” he added about Robert, suggesting that even if he gets into the lineup, a few off days might still be on the table.

On another note, Green confirmed that the Mets are adhering to the regulations regarding the use of AI in the dugout when planning game strategies.

A report surfaced that MLB issued a memo last month prohibiting the use of such applications by teams.

The Mets were among the few teams utilizing this technology.

“We’re committed to following the rules, whatever they might be,” Green stated. “Major League Baseball will make the calls, and we’ll simply play the game.”

Meanwhile, Clay Holmes threw 45 pitches in a simulated outing after his initial minor league rehab start with Single-A Brooklyn was postponed due to rain. Holmes is recovering from a fractured right fibula and will need to complete five innings before potentially rejoining the Mets.

Eric Wagaman stepped in at first base, providing an extra right-handed option against lefty Jesus Luzardo.

Although Jorge Polanco could ideally be the one taking that at-bat, he’s not quite ready to play first yet after his return from the disabled list.

“Now that he’s back and swinging the bat,” Green explained, “we initially planned to use him primarily as a designated hitter. But if he continues to feel good through August, we’re optimistic about starting to look at him for first base. That’s definitely our plan from the beginning.”
