Mets Announcer Critiques Player Use of ABS Challenges
Mets announcer Gary Cohen has voiced his frustration regarding how players are misusing ABS challenges. This commentary followed the Mets’ 10-2 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night.
During the second inning, Mets designated hitter MJ Melendez decided to challenge a pitch from Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty while the Mets were trailing 0-2 with no runners on base. Cohen felt this was an instance of players taking advantage of the challenge system poorly.
“Managers need to address this because players are questioning calls early in games, often losing their challenges. That’s detrimental to the team,” Cohen pointed out.
Darling chimed in, noting that the pitchers and hitters often struggle with their judgment due to their focus on the game. “Their eyes can deceive them,” he said, agreeing with Cohen’s stance that challenges should be a team decision, especially in crucial situations.
Cohen acknowledged a more strategic challenge by Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez earlier in the game on a 3-2 pitch with a runner on base. “That makes sense,” he commented. “You can have a significant impact in that situation. But initiating a challenge at the start of the inning? Not advisable.”
This year marks the first implementation of ABS challenges in MLB, and it’s a learning process for everyone involved. Players are still getting accustomed to how the system works, which operates differently than the NFL’s coach-initiated replay system.
Ultimately, Cohen emphasized the need for players to prioritize team strategy over individual stats when it comes to utilizing these challenges effectively.
