Craig Kimbrel Impresses at Mets Spring Training

PORT ST. LUCIE — Craig Kimbrel may not be officially invited to spring training, but he certainly captures attention whenever he steps onto the mound. The veteran closer, who has Hall of Fame potential, pitched an inning during the Mets’ live batting practice on Wednesday at Clover Park.

A standout moment came during his two at-bats against Juan Soto, another player likely headed for Cooperstown. Soto managed a groundout and also drew a walk.

Coach Carlos Mendoza remarked on Kimbrel’s impressive presence, noting, “He has an outstanding sweeper and curveball, and now he’s experimenting with a cutter. He’ll definitely have his chances here.”

At 37, Kimbrel had a solid season last year, playing in 14 games for both the Braves and Astros with a 2.25 ERA.

With 440 saves accumulated over a 16-year major league career, Kimbrel’s expertise is undeniable.

Mendoza noted a few things that stood out about Kimbrel early in camp: “He’s a humble guy despite being on the cusp of a Hall of Fame career. It’s refreshing to see how respectful he is and how eager he is to share his knowledge. It’s fantastic having him here.”

The Mets also recently held a ceremony to mark the beginning of a new 55,000-square-foot player development complex next to Clover Park, which is expected to open by spring training 2027. The team’s director of baseball operations, David Stearns, was present for the event.

Stearns expressed excitement about the new facility, emphasizing that it will provide both athletes and coaches with everything they’re going to need. He said, “This will strengthen our position as a leader in player development, starting with our new complex in the Dominican Republic and stretching to our home base here in Florida and beyond.”

This $60 million project is fully financed by the Mets and includes a lease extension, allowing the team to remain in Port St. Lucie until 2052.
