LOS ANGELES — Two days of rest wasn’t enough for Brett Batty to convince Mets officials he was ready to resume playing third base.
Batty participated in pregame practice at Dodger Stadium on Friday night to test his left hamstring, but was left out of the Mets’ starting lineup for the second straight game.
He left Tuesday’s game with a hamstring strain after taking an infield hit.
Coach Carlos Mendoza expressed optimism earlier this week that Batty would avoid going on injured reserve.
Mendoza was asked Friday if that confidence had waned.
“Right now I’m confident, but we’ll see how it goes through training,” Mendoza said before the Mets’ 9-4 win over the Dodgers.
Joey Wendle, who committed two errors, started at third base in Batty’s place. Zach Short got the start on the third Wednesday.
Kodai Senga threw a 26-pitch bullpen session at Citi Field and posted a video of it on Instagram. It included the message, “I feel great.”
It was Chiga’s second time on the mound during his rehabilitation, having been sidelined since spring training due to tightness in his right shoulder.
The earliest Chiga can return from the 60-day IL is May 27th.
After throwing 48 pitches as a reliever last Friday, Michael Tonkin was well aware that his time with the Twins was coming to an end and the team had a doubleheader the next day.
He rejoined the Mets on Friday, but the Mets claimed him off waivers from the Twins two days after being drafted. The Mets DFA’d Tonkin on April 5th.
“It was a chaotic situation,” Tonkin said. “There are a lot of moving parts. You can feel a sense of loss sometimes.”
Mets owner Steve Cohen attended the game and had a long conversation with agent Scott Boras before the first pitch. Boras’ clients include Pete Alonso, and he even spoke to his agent before the match.
Mendoza said David Peterson has been taking live batting practice and is about a week away from starting his minor league rehab assignment.
The left-handed pitcher, who underwent surgery in November to repair a torn hip labrum, began the season on the 60-day disabled list and will be eligible to return on May 27. Peterson is part of the team’s rotation.
Tyler Megill pitched his first bullpen session in rehab. His right arm was diagnosed with shoulder strain after he started the game on March 31st.
Tyler Jay cleared waivers and permanently transferred to Triple-A Syracuse.
The left-handed relief pitcher was designated for assignment this week to free up roster space for Tonkin.
