Port St. Lucy – The Mets are reuniting with Flamethrowers from the past, looking towards next season.
Drew Smith, who is expected to miss most (if not all) of this season, rehabilitating from Tommy John's surgery, has reached an agreement with the team on a one-year contract that includes 2026 club options. Industry sources confirmed that this was the case.
Smith's contract will pay him $1 million this season. If the Mets choose their option, the deal is worth an additional $2 million.
Longest-equipped Mets pitcher – he arrived in the 2017 trade and sent Lucas Duda to the Rays – 31-year-old Smith pitched 3.06 ERA in 19 appearances for the team last season, I was closed due to discomfort in my elbow.
Smith had Tommy John surgery on an internal brace on July 13th.
“He's the guy who takes the ball when he's healthy,” said manager Carlos Mendoza. “It was sad that he went down halfway through, but he means a lot to the guys in that locker room.”
Smith also missed the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
