Mets’ Bullpen Shines Against Dodgers
On Sunday, the Mets’ bullpen delivered an impressive performance, managing five scoreless innings and helping to secure a win, despite a rocky outing from Freddy Peralta.
Even though the season hasn’t been particularly fruitful for the Mets, their bullpen has maintained an ERA that sits in the upper half of the league. This was certainly needed since Peralta only made it through four innings, throwing 93 pitches.
Cionel Perez stepped up, stabilizing the game with six crucial outs, while Brooks Lally, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams all added scoreless frames as well.
Weaver had a notable moment, managing to disrupt Teoscar Hernandez with an off-balance throw on an infield chopper.
Perez, who initially signed a minor league deal with the Mets back in May, has proven to be a valuable reliever, sporting a 4.38 ERA and racking up 31 strikeouts—three of which were on Sunday alone.
Interim manager Andy Green reflected on Perez’s contribution, stating, “He was a player that we had a lot of interest in in the middle of the season. Our scouts agreed he was the right type in every way. We really attacked the zone.”
Green also commended Perez for striking out All-Star Freddie Freeman with a well-placed low fastball, while navigating through Peralta’s challenging start.
“We needed those six outs at that point,” Green remarked, emphasizing the importance of Perez’s role.
The future of the bullpen could shift post-trade deadline, as players like Weaver and Reilly are having standout seasons with ERAs of 1.93 and 2.10, respectively. Green hinted at a possibility for “more conservative” choices in the bullpen going forward.
For now, the Mets are focused on gaining momentum as they prepare for upcoming home series against the Braves and Marlins.
