Mets' Edwin Diaz willing to return for the World Baseball Classic

Edwin Diaz’s Recovery and Future with Team Puerto Rico

New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz experienced a significant injury during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, but he remains hopeful about participating in the upcoming 2026 international tournament.

At 31 years old, Diaz injured his right knee while celebrating Team Puerto Rico’s win against the Dominican Republic, resulting in a torn patellar tendon that forced him to sit out the entire season.

In a recent statement, Diaz noted that his injury didn’t occur while pitching, which might have been more concerning. He explained, “I didn’t hurt pitching. That can happen anywhere. If I was pitching, I’d be a little scared.” He’s not fully committed yet to playing for Puerto Rico, but he’s open to the possibility, saying, “For now, I will play if I have the opportunity to play. I will play to represent my country.”

Diaz, a three-time All-Star, reflected that his view on performances in world baseball classics might shift due to his recent injury. However, he only wants to participate to enjoy the experience on behalf of his nation.

His Mets teammate, star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who also played for Team Puerto Rico, is someone Diaz looks forward to teaming up with again, if given the chance.

This season, Diaz has shown impressive stats, completely bouncing back with a 1.55 ERA, a 5-0 record, and 21 saves in just 40 games.

As the Mets (currently at 59-44) gear up for a series starting Friday at 10:15 PM against their opponents (54-49), fans are eager to see Diaz continue his journey on the field.
