Mets experience setback and fall short of playoffs

Mets Season Expectations Diminished After Recent Loss

The New York Mets had their eyes set on a brighter future with their recent acquisition of Juan Soto, moving him from the Bronx to Queens in a significant deal. This was intended to bolster their hopes for the 2025 season.

Starting off strong, the Mets held a record of 45 wins and 24 losses by June 12, which placed them among the top teams in Major League Baseball. However, after some harsh losses, they ended the season at 83-79—quite a tumble from their promising start.

In a recent game, the Miami Marlins eliminated the Mets from playoff contention with a 4-0 shutout. Miami managed to score four runs over just four innings, effectively stifling New York’s batting lineup throughout the match. Interestingly, even with the Cincinnati Reds losing, the playoffs finished out of reach for the Mets.

The team’s manager took responsibility for the setbacks this season. “I’m the one in charge, and I need to reflect on my decisions and the long run here,” he noted.

This season, the Mets had the second-highest payroll in the league, with expenditures exceeding $341 million. Despite the big investment—including a whopping 15-year, $765 million contract for Soto—the team struggled to maintain consistency after a decent start.

Things took a turn during the latter half of the season, marked by a disappointing eight-game losing streak, which started with a series against the Reds followed by games against the Phillies and Rangers. Although they managed to redeem themselves against the Padres, they still dropped two of three games against Washington.

While their series against the Marlins was crucial, New York could secure just one win out of three games. Their overall performance in August and September wasn’t great, ending at 11-17 and 10-15, respectively.

What’s noteworthy is the Mets haven’t made it to the postseason in seven of the last nine years, which adds to the mounting frustrations among the fans and the organization alike.
